Charity steps in to help little Corin after burglars strike
A BRISTOL charity has kindly pledged to cover the loss another charity suffered last week.
At about 2.15am last Monday, two thieves broke into Shireway Community Centre in Yate and stole about £1,400 collected for the Corin's First Steps appeal.
The charity is trying to find £35,000 for three-year-old Corin Potts to have a life-changing operation to help him walk, plus vital aftercare.
Corin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 18 months old and cannot walk unaided, relying on a walking frame or wheelchair to get around.
When Scott Wright, who runs a charity helping children and families effected by cerebral palsy, and his fiancee Melissa, heard what had happened, they felt compelled to help out.
"When I saw the story it made me sick to the stomach," said Mr Scott, of Crossways Road, Knowle. "It almost felt personal because my brother has the same condition.
"I cannot imagine what it felt like to put in all the effort and raise all that money, only for some vile toe-rags to steal it.
"I thought, we've got to help and the first cheque we will send off after our next charity event will be for Corin's First Steps."
On September 16, boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard is coming to Cabot Circus to do a meet and greet and question and answer session.
Tickets, which are still available, will raise money for the Darren Wright Foundation, which Mr Wright set up inspired by his big brother Darren, who developed cerebral palsy as a baby.
Hearing that the foundation had pledged the money, Corin's dad James Potts, 31, said: "It's massive. It's so generous. They don't know us and they didn't have to help, so it's just humbling that they felt obliged to.
"We had a brilliant event at the Shireway and I'm gutted that one or two people let everyone down like this."
Money is being raised for Corin to have selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery (SDR).
While the surgery is available at Frenchay Hospital, just seven miles away from the family's home in Woodchester, Yate, it is not routinely available on the NHS and the local health trusts do not tend to pay for the operation.
The family have been told it is unlikely they will get funding, and they are waiting to find out whether Corin will be able to have the procedure at Frenchay Hospital, for about £23,000, or whether they will have to go to the USA where it would cost considerably more.
The £1,400 stolen was raised the Saturday before the break-in from a treasure hunt, auction and karaoke at the community centre.
So far, more than £29,000 has been raised. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/corinsfirststeps.
For tickets to the Sugar Ray Leonard event, costing £40 and including champagne reception at Cinema de Lux, or to sponsor it, call 07502 312834 or visit enquiries@darrenwrightfound.org.uk.
CCTV of the break-in has been released by the police and Crimestoppers, and can be viewed by visiting www.thisisbristol.co.uk/CorinCCTV.
Anyone with information on the crime should call the police 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Why Microsoft is Celebrating Apple?s Patent Win Over Samsung
Microsoft was pretty much a bystander in Apple?s patent battle with Samsung, but the Windows folks couldn?t be happier with Apple?s $1.05 billion victory. By signing a patent deal with Apple and taking its own direction for smartphones, Microsoft is now better positioned to become a viable alternative to the Apple ecosystem.
Trouble for Samsung - which will appeal the ruling - threatens to tarnish the entire Android ecosystem (though Google may believe Android itself is immune, see Two Ways Samsung?s Court Loss To Apple Is Actually Good For Google). But Microsoft?s patent cross-license with Apple means we won?t be seeing similar suits between Apple and Microsoft.
Microsoft?s Opportunity
So is this a genuine opportunity for Microsoft and its Windows Phone operating system?
No. Not directly.
Microsoft still has to convince consumers to buy into its ecosystem and raise its U.S. market share from a few percentage points to something more substantial. But the decision could encourage phone makers to lean away from Android and more toward Windows Phone, gaining Microsoft ?shelf share? that could someday lead to actual sales.
?Microsoft can actually benefit from the Apple-Samsung verdict, as Windows Phone doesn?t look as expensive or controversial as Android,? said Patrick Moorhead, principal at Moor Insights & Strategy, in an email. ?What once was a ?free? OS, Android now costs the Microsoft license fee, the potential Apple license fee, and the threat of legal battles with Apple. This could push smartphone vendors like HTC, Sony, LG and even Huawei and ZTE closer to Windows Phone.?
Android?s Doomsday Scenario
The doomsday scenario goes like this: In September, Apple will ask the court for an injunction, preventing Samsung from selling the infringing devices within the United States.
If Apple successfully bars the phones at the heart of the case from the U.S. market, the result will be a gaping hole on store shelves. While the ruling doesn?t include Samsung?s latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S III, an injunction would likely force Samsung to concede market share or spend heavily to aggressively develop new, non-infringing models to fill the gap.
Apple then marches through the ranks of other Android phone manufacturers, filing similar suits, winning fines and royalty payments, and possibly injunctions as well. Consumers are left wondering whether or not the phone they preordered will be barred from shipment before launch date - an unlikely scenario, but one that would undermine consumer confidence in Android.
Eventually, Apple would turn against Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google, for a final showdown - though Google?s ?core? version of Android could be a tougher nut to crack As Google noted in a statement, Most of these [patents] don?t relate to the core Android operating system.?
What Does Microsoft Get?
So what does Microsoft actually gain from all of this? Three things:
First, there?s the simple answer: Microsoft?s patent deal offers protection. While the relationships could certainly sour, Microsoft must feel like it can operate with relative impunity at the moment.
Second, Microsoft can continue down its own development path without feeling like Apple is looking over its shoulder. While Microsoft?s Modern UI (formerly known as Metro), the ?live tiles? or widgets that continually update, the ?charms? and the Windows ?home? button seem easily differentiated from Apple?s design, it?s always a good idea to avoid expensive, time consuming lawsuits - even if you eventually prevail.
?[The deal should] provide a stronger opportunity for both of Microsoft?s new platforms - Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 - because they come with indemnification against Apple, suddenly making them far safer,? Rob Enderle, an independent consultant, told the BBC.
The third benefit may be the most important: tarnishing Android with the litigation brush leaves Microsoft looking squeaky clean by comparison. Manufacturers now have to factor in a ?total cost of ownership? formula when choosing which mobile operating system to use - and that formula now has to include the very real threat of litigation.
From a consumer standpoint, the court case isn?t likely to sway Apple or Android partisans, but it could subtly push the general public away from Android.
They could run toward the safe bet: Apple. But they might be open to something new:
As Bill Cox, marketing director for Microsoft?s Phone division, tweeted following the verdict: ?Windows Phone is looking gooooood right now.?

Initial autopsy report inconclusive in South Carolina fighter?s death
An initial autopsy performed on Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, an amateur fighter who died on Saturday night after competing at a regional fight show in South Carolina, has proven inconclusive, according to the Charleston County Coroner. Toxicology tests are pending.
Mims was stepping into the cage for the first time, and was competing at an event called "Fight Night at the Point VI." He allegedly suffered minimal damage during his bout, and witness accounts had him dominating throughout the first round. But Mims began appearing exhausted in the second round, andwhen the 30-year-old seemed unable to improve his position, the referee stopped the bout. Mims was taken backstage; when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he died.
Mims, a Georgia resident, was taking part in a reality show titled "Georgia Boy's Grits-n-Glory." The show released the following statement:
One of the fighters, who happened to be our own Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, was fatally injured tonight, possibly as a result of his fight. The promoters and the South Carolina Fight Commission consulted with the fighters and all involved and decided as a result of the death of one of their own we should call off the rest of the fights. The promoters and the Athletic Commission did everything in their power according to protocol and this accident was beyond their control. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you'll understand as we deal with the gravity of the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with Teestea and his immediate family, which include his five children.
This is the second mixed martial arts-related death in South Carolina history. In 2010, amateur fighter Michael Kirkham died from a brain hemorrhage after suffering a knockout at an event in Aiken, S.C.
As per state regulation, amateur fighters must pass an eye exam, be screened for HIV and Hepatitis, and pass a cursory examination by a physician prior to getting in the cage. It is unknown if Mims had completed those requirements.

Mountain Tactics - Almost Live Season 4 Episode 12
Watch ?All Access: Ronda Rousey? here
Check out the second episode of Showtime's "All Access: Ronda Rousey" right here. It's 23 minutes long, but well worth your time. There is some not safe for work language, so turn the volume down.
Things to watch out for:
1. How both women break into laughter after their face-off, and what they discuss next. I expect fighters to be intense during their weigh-in day faceoffs because it's so close to fight time. Breaking into laughter months in a staredown months before the fight is what I expect.
2. "It's brutal. She's an Olympian." Rousey has no problem throwing around Nick Diaz.
3. "I get to hit stuff and make noise."
4. Rousey's face when she sees her ESPN the Magazine cover, and the discussion with her mother. On the downside, she sees a video of her online exposed much more than she had agreed to.
5. Sarah Kaufman's friend doesn't know when she's fighting. Also, Victoria, BC, being insanely beautiful.
[Related: Kevin Iole: Sarah Kaufman lacks Ronda Rousey's glamour, but that won't matter]
6. Greg Jackson being as Greg Jackson as possible, yelling, "You're doing extremely well!" All coaches should rock grammar like Jackson.
7. Why you shouldn't ask Kaufman or her coach if she's working on armbar defense.
8. The narrator's voice. Without looking, who can identify that voice?
9. "Women being put in their place is part of what's wrong this world." Well said.
