Shogun, BJ Penn, Joe Lauzon: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.5.12
Man, what a show last night, huh? After a string of events that had me questioning whether I should bother paying my cable bill, UFC on FOX 4 knocks it out of the park. The UFC's resident karate man earned himself a shot at the light-heavyweight belt, Joe Lauzon did what Joe Lauzon does, and Mike Swick returned after a lengthy layoff to rack up a win via knockout. All your morning news pertains to info gleaned from the post-fight presser, so let's get right to it.
- UFC president Dana White didn't have nice things to say about Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at the post-fight press conference. Well, he didn't exactly say anything that bad, but, you know, you kind of don't want your boss talking about you like this.

- For putting on yet another exciting fight and finishing opponent Jamie Varner, UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon pocketed a cool 100 grand in bonus money last night. For all you bean counters out there, that's $50,000 for Submission of the Night and $50,000 for Fight of the Night. That's going to make for a pretty decent barbecue at Chez Lauzon in Massachusetts.

- Mike Swick took home the Knockout of the Night bonus for sending DaMarques Johnson into La-La Land. Nice comeback, no?

- Brandon Vera's got nothing to be ashamed about. He was the heavy underdog going into his fight with Shogun, and fought his heart out.

Official: Britain's Trident Iceni Grand Tourer headed to Salon Priv... on diesel power
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Misc. Auto Shows, UK, Design/Style, Diesel, Luxury, MISC

After looking at the new Trident Iceni Grand Tourer, it's obvious that Europe gets all the cool cars. Sexy styling? Check. Amazing performance? Yup. Torquey, fuel-efficient diesel engine? Unequivocally, yes! This built-to-order coupe apparently has it all for the performance enthusiast who wants it all, and the car will be on display at the Salon Privé 2012 next month in London.
Starting at £75,000 (roughly $119,000 USD), the Iceni Grand Tourer is a small two-seater sports car that looks more like a concept car than anything else, with a split open top almost like the original Batmobile, a dark, matte exterior and a contrasting bright-red interior. Overall, the handsome design reminds us a bit of the Pontiac Solstice.
Only in this car's case, it's like a Solstice with premium touches and a Duramax diesel under the hood... on steroids. A quick rundown of the car's spec sheet reads like a supercar, with performance numbers that include a 0-60 time of just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of almost 200 mph from a 6.6-liter turbocharged diesel engine that can run on almost anything, including bio diesel, mineral diesel, palm oil and linseed oil. In standard form, this engine produces 430 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque, but even more impressive is the fact that 700 of these lb-ft are available at just 980 rpm. At this low engine speed, the Trident Iceni geared to run at 70 mph. The company says that's good enough for almost 70 mpg and can give the coupe a driving range of more than 2,000 miles on one tank.
Those wanting even more get-up-and-go can choose the optional upgrade that brings 660 hp and 1050 lb-ft of torque to the table. There is no word as to how much this sporty roadster weighs, but this kind of power would make a school bus fun to drive.
Scroll down for the official press release.

ZTE-made Concord arrives at T-Mobile and Walmart, caters to the starter crowd at $100 contract-free
T-Mobile wants to offer as much of a lure to smartphone newcomers as to power users who might spring for its truly unlimited data, and the ZTE Concord might just be the right kind of bait. The truly 2010-vintage Android 2.3, 3.5-inch screen and 2-megapixel camera won't get anyone's pulse racing, but a $100 contract-free price is hard to ignore -- even for the sort who'd otherwise be looking for a just-does-calls flip phone. Accordingly, the carrier plans to put the Concord in front of audiences that would rarely care to set foot in a dedicated cellphone store. Walmart is selling the phone today for those comfortable with a Walmart Family Mobile plan. If you'd rather show fealty to T-Mobile itself, you'll have to swing through a Target store on or after August 26th.
