Trapped woman killed as car plunges into river in Bristol

Two people have been arrested after a woman died when a car ploughed through bridge railings, overturned and plunged into the River Avon in Bristol city centre early today.
She was trapped in a BMW that careered off Passage Street around 4am.
Four other people in the car managed to escape, of which two were taken to hospital for treatment, but despite the efforts of specialist teams from Avon Fire and Rescue Service, the woman could not be saved.
Six police officers who dived into the water to rescue the occupants were also taken to hospital but later released.
A fire service spokesman said: "This was a complex incident with all three emergency services working very closely together.
"Four people escaped the vehicle and one person was trapped."
He said the car was stabilised using a winch and the woman was pulled free by firefighters and transferred to a nearby pontoon where ambulance crews tried to revive her.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said two people had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He added: "We are not looking for anybody else in connection with the incident and witnesses are asked to contact police on 101."
